Each Noongar Boodja event is centred around one of the six Noongar seasons of Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba, Kambarang and Birok.
Students experience a variety of cultural activities traditionally associated with each season, such as:
- plant uses
- hunting
- language
- art
- dance
- traditional games
Birok, the first summer. The bibool (paperbark) and moodgar (WA Christmas tree) are in full bloom to indicate the arrival of the first summer.
Noongar people have moved back towards the coastline and are living off the seasonally fat crabs, crayfish, mullet and bream. Traditional burnings would also take place at this time of the year, as both a hunting technique and for land management.
This Noongar Boodja Birok event will focus on educating students about the significance of boodja (country) and the responsibility of caring for country, including cultural burning, cultural dance and storytelling in fun and interactive workshops, led by Aboriginal presenters.
